about

Following on from the inclusion of Raven’ Haven / Chill Out Haven in Boot Leg Remix Works Vol. 3, four new tracks inspired by the world of Cool Kid Cody, the acclaimed point and click visual novel from 90% Studios, were created following Cone Lad's successful incursion into that universe. Additionally, a variety of influences from across the Electronic Music spectrum also helped inform the EP's direction, bridging the gap between tracks featured on the Cool Kid Cody soundtrack and the other tunes featured in the "Hella City Radio" playlist. Each of these is dusted with Korg Monologue elements, hence the title.

The first half consists of the following short tracks which perhaps wouldn't sound out of place in the game if they were on loop in the background in certain sections of it:

"CKC Intro" (obviously) starts the EP off with a short Euro House/µ-Ziq/Kero Kero Bonito experimental jam, inspired by the Cool Haven surroundings. "Budget" sounding percussion elements and glass sounding synths result in a track which could be mistaken for a demo from µ-Ziq's Bluff Limbo album, maybe.

"Star Gazing from the Disco Ball" takes blatant cues from Barker style Ambient Trance for a track calling out for the chill out rooms. Probably the most minimalistic track of the bunch, it's intended to capture how pretty the stars look from Chill Haven. While Cone Lad might consider it to be an elitist institution, the views are still pretty at least.

The second half consists of tracks which take their inspiration from the Electronic Listening Music of the Warp records compilation Artificial Intelligence, splitting the different between home listening and club listening. CKC flair has not been left out, of course:

The "Downtown" remix production was created in a similar 2022 timeframe to the "Raven’ Haven' remix, but it took until May 2023 until it was properly finished off with some Cool Korg elements. It massively extends upon that minute long loop with some abstract sound design thrown in, resulting in a slow burn IDM/Ambient Techno track that calls to mind some of Autechre's earlier 90's material. It wouldn't sound out of place in many cities, probably.

"Lame and Cool, Averaged" is the most dancefloor friendly option here, occupying a headspace somewhere between Tangerine Dream, early Trance, Up!'s "Spiritual High" track and Bleep Techno. So in other words, more vintage 90's vibes. Envisioned to soundtrack the fall of Chill Haven and its arbitrary hierarchy system as well as possibly end up as the centrepiece of several DJ sets, I might have just accidentally came up with a minor summer anthem here. Pop this track on if there's something worth celebrating in this challenging world.

If you're a fan of Cool Kid Cody, or just simply like 90's electronic music, go give this one a listen.
